The Chromatic Pastures
“Alone, we are each a color. Together, we are light itself.”
The Urknall
The Great Composition
The universe was composing something. Origor was a sustained note held in silence — the preparation before the chord. The grey-green world was not a lesser state; it was the silence before the music began. The Urknall was a chord: eight notes sounding simultaneously across the world, each in its own register, each distinct, all part of the same piece. The composition is ongoing. Every faction is a voice. The composition will not be finished until all eight voices are in harmony. The Chromatic do not believe the PRISMA fragment is superior — they believe it is the fragment that makes the others comprehensible: the voice that determines whether the piece is music or chaos.
Origin Myth
The PRISMA fragment arrived in the south with no violence and no drama — it simply descended, slowly, and settled into a meadow as if it had always belonged there. Where other fragments shattered, burned, froze, or detonated, this one completed. The meadow became the first Chromatic territory within a season: wildflowers in colors that didn't exist before, crystal formations growing from the soil, the air itself refracting light into slow prismatic arcs. The PRISMA Exalari developed over decades, from creatures already present in the meadow, changed gradually by ambient Nevril into more complex, more resonant versions of themselves.
Core Belief
Connection is the primary truth. Everything else is consequence. The Chromatic Pastures values synergy: the increase in value that occurs when things work together correctly. They are not the strongest faction in isolation. Their PRISMA Nevril is not destructive. But they can make everything better together, to degrees that quickly exceed what any individual component could achieve.
Society
The most horizontal governance structure in Origor. The Chromatic Pastures operates through resonant consensus: large gatherings where disagreements are resolved through argument, symbolic color-display, and collective decision-making. The Prisma-Souverain (Chroma Sovereign) is not a ruler but a focal point — the most PRISMA-saturated individual, whose presence amplifies the coherence of any gathering. The capital, Resonanzherz (Resonance Heart), looks different in every season. Maps of it become outdated in weeks.
Daily Life
Every significant event in Chromatic life requires a Harmonie — a composed musical response created specifically for that event. A military campaign begins with a composed overture performed by officers before deployment. A diplomatic meeting opens with an agreed harmony. A new building's completion requires a piece written for the specific acoustic properties of the finished structure. Outsiders find this exhausting; Trade Envoy Nass, the only Chromatic diplomat with a productive long-term relationship with the Gilded Void, abandons all Harmonie protocols in their presence. He has discussed this with the Souverain. She has approved it. The approval was difficult for her.
Architecture
Chromatic architecture has no right angles. Every building, wall, bridge, and public space in Resonanzherz is built on curves — because PRISMA light refracts differently off curved surfaces, and the specific curvature of each structure is designed to interact with the light at specific times of day. A building's interior changes color through the day; this is intentional. Buildings are designed to develop, not last: a structure identical to what it was when built has failed. A structure that has grown in ways the architect anticipated has succeeded. The Gilded Void's cartographers have attempted to map Resonanzherz three times. All three versions were outdated before distribution.
Art & Music
Music and visual art are not considered separate disciplines. The primary tradition is harmonic visual art — tiled patterns that create larger patterns, designed so that the visual rhythm of the pattern and the musical rhythm of a composed accompaniment are the same structure. A viewer who can hear the music experiences the visual work differently. The art is complete only when both are present simultaneously. Coming-of-age requires composing a personal resonance signature — a solo piece representing the individual's harmonic identity, performed once publicly and never again. The community carries it forward; the composer is not the keeper of their own signature.
Rituals
Harmonie: the composed response to any significant event — scope flexible, requirement absolute. A single instrument for 90 seconds or a full community ensemble for 40 minutes: what matters is that the event is acknowledged musically. The Resonance Signature: performed once at coming-of-age. The moment when an individual formally contributes their voice to the ongoing community composition. Community members remember it as a foundational reference for how they understand that person. The Annual Harmonie: once per year, the entire Chromatic Pastures performs a simultaneous composition. For that hour, Resonanzherz is perfectly in harmony. Afterward, the Prism's output is elevated for approximately 42 seconds. The archive annotation reads: 'The fragment responds.' No further interpretation is given.
Military Doctrine
Harmonize. Stack. Exceed. Every unit enhances every other unit, and this enhancement compounds. Individually middle-tier in small engagements. In large, coordinated engagements, the multiplicative stacking produces capability that exceeds every counter — but requires time for the synergy to build. Weak to AoE, which damages the tight formation before stacking completes.
Named Characters
Souverain Lara Schein
Current Chroma Sovereign. Age 33. Her body emits a slow, shifting light — each color cycling on a 4-second interval, visible through her clothing and skin. She does not speak often in public, because when she speaks in PRISMA-saturated tone, people agree before they've processed the content. She uses it carefully.
Harmonie-Meister Sev
The Chromatic Pastures' military commander. The most PRISMA-saturated non-Sovereign in the faction's history — he perceives all resonance frequencies simultaneously, which he describes as 'seeing the music.' Has never lost a late-game engagement. Has lost several early-game engagements by miscalculating how long he had to build harmonization.
Vielfalt (The Spektral Phoenix)
The oldest surviving Chromatic Exalari. Unlike the Lava Phoenix which reforms with accumulated fury, Vielfalt reforms with accumulated memory. Each death adds to a running archive of experiences carried forward. Has died 14 times. Its current manifestation is the oldest-continuous-experience entity in the Chromatic Pastures.
Sacred Place
The Prism
The PRISMA fragment's landing site: a meadow at the center of the Chromatic Pastures where the grass is pure white and the light overhead is permanently fractured into spectrum. It does not look dramatic. It does not look sacred. Standing near it, you perceive patterns more easily — decisions are clearer, disagreements resolve faster. The Chromatic Pastures' long-term diplomatic strategy involves holding negotiations near the Prism when possible.
View of Others
Wise record-keepers. Their commitment to balance without harmony frustrates us — they understand each element separately but not how they connect.
The most natural affinity outside our own faction. Both deal in growing, connecting systems. Their suspicion of us is based on a misunderstanding we are working to correct.
The one tactical problem we cannot currently solve. AoE breaks our formation before harmony builds.
Preserved things have perfect resonance signatures. We could learn from each other. We haven't.
The oldest stones have the deepest harmonic frequencies. They experience our military capacity as threatening. We don't intend it to be.
The most mutually beneficial relationship in Origor. Their solar crystals are among the finest PRISMA resonance conductors available.
Nekro Nevril disrupts our harmonic frequencies in proximity. We don't understand why. They avoid us, which is convenient.
◈ Secret
The Prism is not passive. Unlike the other Cores, the PRISMA fragment does not simply radiate — it listens. When a large, well-harmonized Chromatic army passes through the Prism's field, the fragment strengthens its output afterward. When the Chroma Sovereign sits near it, the fragment's spectrum shifts in apparently responsive patterns.
Souverain Lara Schein believes she has been in communication with it — in the color-pattern language PRISMA-saturated individuals use. She has been documenting the exchanges for three years in cipher. Her most recent translation: 'Seven are moving. One is already still. Find the one that does not move.'
She brought this to the Neutral Archives meeting. Six weeks later, Sela Mohr accessed the sealed Hearthstone document for the first time in four years. Three weeks after that, Lara Schein dispatched Harmonie-Meister Sev to map the Thalvori territory's exact current borders. The data is being collected. No one has announced why.
